THE SPARKS WITHIN : CHAPTER 2
I woke up to the sight of blank white ceilings and the smell of burning incense pleasuring my nostrils. My eyes shot open but I lay there in silence for a while. Just like that, everything that happened yesterday came crashing, it all came back to me.
I heaved a sigh. Alhaji Tanko is something else, he's just out of this world. he’s a good man and he came here with good intentions, I respect him for that, but I know that we are just not meant for each other, I hope he understands.I know it’s not his fault but I couldn’t help it. I wonder what he thinks of me now after what I had done.
My heart was heavy and full of sorrow. I don't even know what hurts the most, looking at him or knowing that I was suppose to spend the rest of my life with him. I swallowed the sob that rose in my throat. It hurts knowing that the man you thought was meant for you wasn’t meant for you and that he is neither the man of your dreams nor your happily ever after. Thinking about waking up every morning and seeing him next to me brought tears to my eyes.
As I lay there thinking about yesterday’s incident, the door to my room flew open and someone came in. It was talatu carrying a lot of things in a very big fine leather bag, the bag itself looks very expensive talk less of the stuff inside it. she dropped it by the side of my bed and brought out a huge sum of money. She handed the money to me and she said "Alhaji Tanko brought all these gifts for you and he was even kind enough to leave some money for you. "I ignored her, so she dropped the money on my bed just beside me and left. She just knows exactly how to annoy me.
I quickly counted the money as soon as she left, it was one thousand Naira. I was surprised because it is a huge sum of money, that man must be crazy. I stood up, took all the gifts and money and I headed straight to where the dustbin was, I threw all the gifts and money inside and I went back to my room.
I washed my face and brushed my teeth then I joined the rest of the family for breakfast. We ate in silence. My brother kept cracking jokes and making silly comments just to make me talk, which I would have, under normal circumstances. But this morning, all his efforts were in vain so he gave up.
Finally my mom broke the silence, she asked me what happened between me and Alhaji Tanko yesterday. I almost choked on my bread, But i managed to swallow it. Then I replied, "nothing". Then my dad asked "why did you cry?" Then I said "because it was a horrible experience, Have you seen him? I asked my dad". He said "yes I’ve met him once, but this is not about his looks. don’t you like him?" I said "no, I don’t, not even a bit". Then my brother cut in, he said "your sweetheart Tanko is coming for you". I picked the bowl of water beside me and splashed it on him. To my surprise, the water hit someone but not my brother because he swiftly darted to the other side.
I saw a pair of Eyes burning with anger and rage, looking directly into my eyes. behold Alhaji dogo, Alhaji Tankos father, my fathers childhood friend soaked in water. He gave me a death glare. I couldn’t move, I started shivering with fear and I felt a cold sweat running down my spine. He shouted at me “you selfish, self centered, spoilt brat. Where are your manners? You’ve rejected and humiliated my son and now you’re splashing water on me, how dare you? “ I didn’t utter a word, I just stood there with my lips agape.
My father quickly asked him to relax and come have a seat so that they could have a talk, but he said he’s not here to sit. He kept shouting and cursing. He then said to me “whether you like it or not you’re getting married to Tanko or my name is not Dogo”. And you’ll pay for all the pain you’ve caused my son. By this time my Dad had had enough, he said "Dogo I thought you knew better, I’m disappointed in you. please leave my house right now, come back whenever you are ready to talk like a civilized human being". Dogo snapped, he became so furious. Then he said "I’ll leave your house because I can see that you’re on her side now, but give me 3 days, she’ll come crawling and begging for my sons hand in marriage" and then he left.
"And no daughter of mine shall get married to the son of an old selfish inconsiderate fool a voice called out" It was my mothers angry voice. That statement made my day, it made me so happy that I didn’t know when tears of joy started pouring out of my eyes.
